Lungs after Smoking : Will the Smoker’s Lungs Heal after They Quit?

Lungs after smoking are working differently than the normal lungs. After someone smoked the cigarette, no matter he is active or passive smoker, it will affect the body especially in terms of healthiness. The main part that will be hardly attacked is lungs and the airways. But there is good news though. An expert from American Lung Association said that the lungs will heal by itself until certain degree. But how could that possible?

When a person inhales the chemical substances that live in the cigarette smoke, the lung’s soft linings become irritated and sometimes inflamed too. After several hours, the tiny hair called cilia that shapes the lungs will experience the slow-down of movement. This is possible because they are kind of paralyzed and temporarily less effective so they will slow-down the process of cleaning out the mucus as well as the other bad substances from the lungs.

People that smoke also tend to have thicker lungs and they produce more mucus than normal lungs. It happens because cilia cannot work as quickly as it is supposed to be. The mucus will accumulate along the airway and it triggers the cough since the airways are clogged. Too much build up mucus can also lead to the other disease and infection like bronchitis in chronic stage.

How lungs heal itself

In general speaking, there are several short-term inflammatory on the smokers’ lungs but the inflammatory can be reversed right after the smokers quit smoking. The swelling that decreased will boost the growth of cilia. This condition leads to the effectiveness of cleaning out the secretion made by mucus. You need several days or weeks in order to notice the different on your body after quitting. The shortness of breath will decrease especially if you do exercise.

It is still unclear about how it can happen. But the smoke from cigarette contains carbon monoxide that can interfere with the transport process of oxygen in your body. When you do not smoke, the content of CO is decreased too so it removes the shortness of breath little by little. Other than that, the inflammation also decreased due to the absence of irritant substances in the lungs. It creates more space for the air to flow after all.

The other health benefit by quit smoking is reducing the possibility for lung cancer. Well, the risk will never completely go away but it is better than if you are smoking cigarette or tobacco.

Not all changes are reversible

For your information, your body is really good at fixing some damages happened to your internal organ. The damage cells and tissues due to smoking can also be repaired. But unfortunately, not all broken things can be reversed.

Long-term smoking can cause emphysema, the chronic disease on the pulmonary. The condition damages the certain portion of your lungs. You will get shortness of breath once you attacked by this condition. It also makes the airway’s walls lose their elasticity. So, this is the explanation of lungs after smoking.
