Parts of Lungs
Before knowing about lungs function, it is important to know parts of lungs previously so that you are more understand of each part function in the breathing process. Human lungs are divided into right part and left part. The right one comes with three sections which commonly called as lobes. Meanwhile, the left one only has two lobes. The lobes are formed from sponge-like tissue which is mantled by a membrane known as pleura.
The function of this membrane is separating the lungs and chest wall. Different lung half comes with its own pleura membrane. Hence, when one lung leaks, the other remains working. When the lungs expand, they allure air to enter the body. However, when they compress, they get rid of carbon dioxide from the body which happens to be a waste produced by the body in respiratory process. Even though lungs do not come with muscles which can pump air in and out, the diaphragm and rib cage help this process.
The works of lungs in in respiratory process
When people breathe, air move down the throat and continue to enter the trachea or commonly known as windpipe. The trachea has small passages known as bronchial tubes which enter each lung. In each side of lung, the bronchial tubes are still divided into smaller divisions.
There are bronchioles which refer to smallest branches and each of them comes with air sack namely alveoli. Human lungs commonly equipped with around 480 million alveoli. The walls of alveoli contain capillary veins which plays role in transferring the oxygen from the alveoli into the blood. The oxygen then brought into the heart and pumped all through the body into tissues as well as organs.
When oxygen enters the bloodstream, carbon dioxide moves from the blood into alveoli and transfer into all parts of the body. This process is known as gas exchange. However, when people perform shallow breathing, carbon dioxide likely to lurk inside the body and it will trigger people to yawn.
This organ is actually very special as it has its own way in term of self-protection. Lungs are known with their cilia which seems a coating containing small hairs. These delineate the bronchial tubes and work back and forth by scattering mucus so that it can be removed from the body. This mucus will clean the lungs and get rid of them from any dust, germs and other strange items that may leave in this organ and hamper proper lungs function.
